LORO PARQUE Tenerife

700,000,000 people visit zoos and aquariums worldwide each year.

Annually more than 700 million people visit zoos all over the world. They offer an ideal possibility to introduce the natural world to people who live in a world which is more and more focused on cities and further away from nature. The role of zoos and aquariums as messengers for the animals is essential for a solution to the ecological crisis. This role is officially acknowledged by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), worldwide the most important association of conservation organisations.

257 dolphins live in European parks. Each year 300,000 die in fishing nets.

Recent studies* prove that the life-expectancy of dolphins in zoological facilities – if kept properly – is 35 years, whereas in the wild it only is 17 years. In the wild it is uncommon that dolphins reach an age of 40 years, whereas in dolphinariums it is frequent. Currently, the oldest dolphin born under human care was Nellie, born in 1953, who lived until 61 years.
